nwa: a biomythographic rendering of x is a new, multidisciplinary work by Lester St. Louis for his 2024-25 Roulette Residency in collaboration with Armand Hammer (Billy Woods, ELUCID), Shamar Watt a.k.a Bongowattz, and Chris Williams (as the duo HxH with St. Louis). Equal parts music, movement, and film, the piece delves into real and synthesized histories of the Black diaspora, symbolized through a figure titled “x.” x carries a Rastafarian Lion of Judah flag on his shoulder, which points to an abstracted, symbolic past and future.

This grouping came together from St. Louis’ proposition to think through these ideas with collaborators whose own bodies of work dive into similar thoughts. Armand Hammer, together and independently are wordsmiths of the highest caliber crafting narratives and worlds that elevate the mundane to the mythical. Bongowattz is a sound and movement artist tapped deep into spiritual and people movements that show a ghostly world intertwined with our own. HxH is an expansive thought vehicle for Williams and St. Louis, moving through spaces that are both heavy and free. In this raw initial presentation of the piece, they will all move the audience through the world of x and show what could be inside, making us all x – looking at ourselves, looking at time.

“Street corners filled with erbys on route to everywhere, packed buses and dollar vans slugging, careening down the boulevard. Car stereos and bluetooth speakers blasting on the corner where a ghost, a monument, a man stands; firmly holding position. I don’t know who this is… but he’s always there, speaking soundless volumes.” -Lester St. Louis
